Antonio Conte blames Tottenham’s mentality for their loss to Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton FC

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has urged his team to improve their mentality following a late loss to Southampton on Wednesday night.

Spurs put in an inconsistent performance in north London. They took the lead through a Jan Bednarek own goal in the first half, only for the Saints to equalise five minutes later through Armando Broja. Spurs eventually regained the lead through Son Heung-min. However, headers from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams turned the game around. Later in injury time Steven Bergwijn’s late equaliser was ruled out for offside by VAR.

Antonio Conte told reporters : “We made many mistakes in the first half, important mistakes.” In the second half we did well, scored and then we have to be better to defend.”

Conte praised his team’s attitude but criticised their performance when in possession of the ball. Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the top four are harmed as a result of this result. Even a draw would have been enough to lift Conte’s side above sixth-placed Arsenal.
