According to LaLiga president Javier Tebas, Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has had “zero” financial impact on LaLiga.

In recent years, LaLiga have lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus in 2018 after leaving Real Madrid for a fee of €100 million. Messi left Barcelona as a free agent in September to join PSG.

When asked if Messi’s departure had a financial impact on LaLiga, Tebas responded: “No, Zero. A one-time departure by a star or two, as happened with Cristiano, has no bearing on us. When you look at it, Serie A did not grow with Cristiano.”

“We signed an eight-year [rights] agreement with ESPN in May 2021,” Tebas said. “Do you believe they know who will be playing in LaLiga in eight years?” That is something neither they nor anyone else is aware of. But they know it’s a financially sound league with a steady supply of good players.”
