Manchester City moved 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over the Bees.
Mahrez’s first-half penalty and De Bruyne’s strike after the break extended City’s unbeaten run in the league to 14 games. City were held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton in their previous league game, but they quickly recovered to put pressure on Liverpool. On Thursday, they host Leicester in one of their two remaining games against the champions.
Brentford did a good job of keeping City quiet in the first half, but conceded a penalty in the 40th minute. Brentford’s problems worsened after a fifth consecutive league defeat pushed them closer to the relegation zone.
City did not need to hit top gear in the second half. City were unaffected by the fuss as they dominated from start to finish.
Manchester City are in the driving seat to win the Premier League this season.
