Rangers qualify despite defeat against Red Star Belgrade

Rangers advanced to the next round of the Europa League after defeating Red Star Belgrade on aggregate 2-4.

Rangers won the first leg of this tie 3-0 and had a comfortable lead going into the second leg at Rajko Mitic Stadium. Rangers lost the second leg against Red Star Belgrade 2-1. However, they won the tie with a 2-4 aggregate.

Rangers looked like they would make a comeback against Red Star and advance to the quarter-finals. However, a stunning performance by Rangers’ keeper McGregor and a second-half goal by Kent destroyed their hopes.

Red Star Belgrade dominated ball possession with 59% and had 17 shots, 13 of which were on target. Meanwhile, the Rangers had seven shots, four of which were on target. But Rangers managed to defend their 4-goal aggregate lead and advance to the quarter-final.

Rangers qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time in the Europa League since 2007-08.
