Steven Gerrard also confirmed that the club would try to sign Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal. The Brazilian international was sent out on loan to Aston Villa because he was not able to live up to his high expectations at the Camp Nou.
Coutinho helped Aston Villa beat Southampton 4-0 by scoring a goal and assisting on another. Moreover, Coutinho has now scored 3 goals and given 3 assists in 7 games for Aston Villa.
“Phil was successful at Barcelona but he had difficult periods as well,’ said Gerrard. ‘He got to the stage where he needed a change of scenery and a different movie”
“We want to be that movie for him because if we want to get to where we want to be, we need to build it around talents like Phil, because at his best he is a high-level player.”
“All good teams have game-changers who the opposition are really concerned about before a ball is kicked. Phil has that status and he is giving belief to his team-mates.”
“Our forwards Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings want him because he delivers on the big stage” Gerrard added.”
Aston Villa will need around 33 to 40 million euros to sign Coutinho from Barcelona.
